Ninjas in Pyjamas, Vitality reach semifinals at IEM Winter

Ninjas in Pyjamas and Team Vitality kept their title hopes alive with quarterfinal victories Sunday at the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Intel Extreme Masters Season XVI Winter event.

Ninjas defeated GODSENT and Vitality beat Gambit Esports, both by 2-1 scores, to fill out the semifinals of the playoff bracket. On Saturday, Ninjas will face G2 Esports and Vitality will square off with Virtus.pro, with the winners meeting in the finals Dec. 12.

The quarters began with a 16-10 win on Nuke for Ninjas, but GODSENT responded with a 16-8 triumph on Overpass. Ninjas broke the tie by winning 16-8 on Ancient.

Nicolai "device" Reedtz of Denmark led Ninjas with 64 kills and a plus-14 kills-to-deaths differential. Teammate Hampus "hampus" Poser of Sweden added 62 kills and a plus-12 differential. Bruno "b4"tiN" Camara led the all-Brazilian GODSENT squad with 54 kills.

Team Vitality routed Gambit 16-5 on Dust II before Gambit notched a 16-9 victory on Vertigo. The decisive map, Mirage, went into overtime before Vitality eked out the 19-17 win.

Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut carried the all-French Vitality side with 73 kills and a plus-21 differential, while Kevin "misutaaa" Rabier posted 60 kills and a plus-8. Russia's Timofey "inters" Yakushin guided Gambit with 61 kills and a plus-8.

Sixteen teams began the event competing for a share of a $250,000 prize pool. Opening-round matches were best-of-one, followed by best-of-three series for the rest of the group stage. Six teams now comprise playoff bracket, with the quarterfinals and semifinals best-of-three and the finals best-of-five.
